Skin In The Game

In our industry we cover our feet with socks and shoes (more than likely steel toe). We put various hats on to protect our heads from the sun, rain, cold and damaging our domes. We also wear safety glasses to protect our eyes.

Skin is our largest organ—adults carry some 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) and 22 square feet (2 square meters) of it.

Lets talk about our hands. We use them to turn wrenches, to poor oil, to spray various cleaners, to grab dirty machinery parts. Guess what? That little organ we talked about earlier. Yes, that’s right, our skin. It actually covers our hands as well.

One example of something we come in contact with often in our line of business is crude oil (refined of course). Crude oil is a complex mixture of petrochemicals that includes all the most dangerous chemicals in gasoline, plus plenty of others — clearly not something you want to be coated in.

Dizziness, euphoria, nausea, blurry vision and headaches are a few of the short-term effects of such compounds as benzene, toluene, and xylenes, which are also found in gasoline. Symptoms can be a lot like a very bad case of alcohol poisoning which also foul up the workings of the nervous system.

There are long-term health dangers too. Benzene, in particular, has been tied to adult leukemia and other cancers. Benzene does this by entering cells and damaging DNA material.

Simply put you should be protecting that skin on your hands.
